Innovations

Making Election Secure, Accessible and Usable
The Computing for Social Good Lab invented Prime III, an open source accessible voting technology. To our knowledge, this was the first voting system to implement an universal design. Prime III is also the only open source voting technology created by a university research lab that has been adopted and used in Federal, State and Local elections. Many of the modern day ballot marking devices (BMD) model Prime III. We also invented the inLine Ticketing System to provide social distancing during voting and other contexts by forming a virtual line. The research team is also working on absentee voting technologies to ensure all absentee ballots are counted. The team has projects in voter verification or voter id as well.

    Making Voting Technologies Transparent
The transparent voting machine prototype is powered by Prime III. This ballot marking device (BMD)demonstrates a patent-pending transparent interactive printing interface that allows the voter to see their selections and approve them upon printing.

    Making Algorithms Fair and Unbiased
Dr. Gilbert invented Applications Quest™, a patented technology aimed to help admissions and hiring officials diversify their recommendations within the bounds of the law. This technology uses an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm to do holistic comparisons of applications. Applications Quest is also being used to reduce bias in machine learning algorithms.

    Making Traffic Stops Safe
The Computing for Social Good Lab invented the Virtual Traffic Stop to address conflicts that occur during traffic stops. This innovations uses mobile phones to interface with law enforcement and a third party during a traffic stop to reduce tensions. The Virtual Traffic Stop is a deescalation mechanism that can keep both law enforcement and drivers safe.
