Internetworking

An earlier page described how to transfer frames of data error-free from one node to another, another described multiplexing on a shared line, while others described circuit switching and packet switching.

Yet another described LANs and MANs. All these allow machines that are directly connected to communicate, but other procotocols are needed for machines that are only indirectly connected.

The previous page described protocols in general. This page describes network and internetwork layer protocols.

The next page describes the end-to-end protocols of the transport layer.
