High-Speed Algorithmic Logic (HAL)

The HAL program, to be sponsored by the Wright Laboratory Armament Directorate is aimed at providing a high-speed Single-Instruction Multiple Datastream (SIMD) dual-use computer suited to the rigors of military guidance and tracking systems as well commercial image processing and computer vision applications.

Proposals for the HAL program were requested under Air Force Broad-Agency Announcement BAA MNK 94-0002. The University of Florida and the Martin Marietta Corporation proposed to develop a system to satisfy the HAL program guidelines by combining the Martin Marietta GAPP (Geometric Array Parallel Processor) and University of Florida image algebra technologies to provide a massively parallel computer that can be programmed for computer vision and image processing applications with the Image Algebra C++ (iac++) object library.
