This documents describes the mechanisms by which graduate student
Teaching Assistants (TAs) are appointed to classes.
Who Makes TA Assignments?
Both the determination of classes eligible for TAs and undergraduate
graders, and the assignment of TAs to classes are made by the CIS
Department TA Committee.
The appointment of specific undergraduate graders is made by the
course instructor.
Which Courses Get TAs?
Each of the following courses will normally be assigned TAs:
- Teaching Positions
- CIS 3020 (2 TAs)
- COP 3530 (2 TAs)
- CGS 3531 (5 TAs)
- Course Support Positions
- COT 3100 (2 TAs)
- CEN 3031
- CDA 3101
- CGS 3063 (2 TAs)
- CGS 3470
- COP 4600
- CDA 5155
- COT 5405
- COP 5555
- COP 5615
Other courses will be assigned TA support as necessary and feasible.
For other courses to receive a TA, the instructor must request that
the TA committee provide support.
The following general guidelines apply to determining the Full Time
Effort (FTE) level for a TA appointment:
- A TA providing course support shall be nominally assigned at 25% FTE.
- A TA teaching a one hour section shall be nominally assigned at 33% FTE.
- A TA teaching two one hour sections or a 3 hour section shall nominally
be assigned at 40% effort.
The TA committee may take into consideration factors such as large class
size or burdensome duties and adjust the FTE for specific appointments
accordingly.
How are assignments of TAs to Courses Made?
- Students must apply for TA positions using our
on-line TA application form
and then verify application in person with the graduate secretary, Mr. John Bowers.
- Instructors will be asked to identify specific candidates whom they
would like to employ.
- Eligibility of applicants to hold TA positions will be certified.
- TAs will be assigned to sections as follows:
