After many years devoted to teaching and research at the University of Florida, Baba Vemuri, Ph.D., was recently named a Distinguished Professor. Dr. Vemuri, who is also the Wilson and Marie Collins Endowed Professor in Engineering, is the third person in the Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering (CISE) to receive the distinction.
The title of Distinguished Professor at the University of Florida is a rare honor given to those with exceptional records of teaching and research.
“Distinguished Professor is the highest rank a UF faculty member can achieve. This is truly an honor earned by Dr. Vemuri for his outstanding research and teaching over the years,” said Juan E. Gilbert, Ph.D., the Banks Family Preeminence Endowed Professor and chair of the CISE department.
Dr. Vemuri’s research interests include geometric deep learning, geometric statistics, medical image computing, computer vision, machine learning and information geometry. For the last several years, his research work has primarily focused on statistical analysis of manifold-valued data with applications to medical image computing and computer vision. Earlier this year, Dr. Vemuri was awarded a $1.39 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), and National Institute on Aging (NIA) to assess the potential of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging for the purpose of differential diagnosis of neurodegenerative disorders.
He earned his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He has published over 200 refereed journal articles and conference proceedings on Geometric Statistics, Medical Image Computing, Computer Vision, Graphics and Applied Mathematics.
Dr. Vemuri has received several best paper awards at various international conferences, including three times best poster presentation award at the biennial International Conference on Information Processing in Medical Imaging (2001, 2005 and 2021). He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (2001) and the Association for Computing Machinery (2009). He is one of four recipients of the 2017 IEEE Computer Society’s Technical Achievement Award. In 2015, he was awarded the Doctoral Dissertation Mentorship Award from the UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.
