Human Computer Interaction FAQ

Q. What will we learn in HCI?

A. We will cover the basics of human computer interaction, including interaction design, interfaces, hardware, and software.  We'll also look into current approaches to 2D and 3D interfaces, and you will get to design some of your OWN interfaces using things such as image based tracking, novel interaction devices (like say a 'responsive table that reacted to your hands [using a projector and webcam].

You will learn how to do a formal user or human factors study.

You can explore a variety of cutting edge issues such as human-robotics interfaces, speech and gesture recognition, or AI + interfaces.

Q. What will we NOT cover in this course?

A. Building graphical user interfaces (GUIs).  We will not go into too much depth into 2D GUIs and the 'philosophy' aspect of HCI.

Q. Is HCI right for me?

A. Your background should include competent programming. A desire to build new and wacky interfaces is a plus, thus engineering skills are good.  Creativity is important.  A strong understanding of basic mathematics is required.

Q. What do you assume from students coming in?

A. Basic Computer Science and programming skills
