The laboratory for Computer Vision, Graphics, and Medical Imaging (CVGMI) at the University of Florida serves two main purposes:

  • To promote basic and applied research in Computer Vision, Vision-Graphics and Medical Image Analysis.
  • To provide a research environment for faculty and graduate students with research interests in the aforementioned areas.

Faculty from various Departments are involved in this Laboratory and the Laboratory facilitates their interaction with each other, domestic and international visitors from Universities and industry. The CVGMI Laboratory has been the site for several workshops for representatives from other Univesities, business, the U.S. Government, and foreign governments (United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia).


The focus of CVGMI is on Computer Vision, Vision-Graphics, Medical Image Analysis, Manifold statistics, Machine Learning as well as key disciplines that support these areas.

Computer Vision involves automated analysis of images obtained from various sensing modalities; Vision-Graphics is the bridge between Computer Vision and Computer Graphics and involves tasks that are common to both Vision and Graphics such as building shape representations and image-based rendering etc.; Medical Image Analysis, as the name suggests involves automatic analysis of medical imagery e.g., MRI (PD, T1, T2, DWI), CT, US, PET etc. to produce tools that would assist the clinician in diagnosis or the scientist in understanding the anatomy or the physiology in normal subjects or the changes in the same caused due to pathologies; Manifold statistics involves developing mathematical techniques to perform statistical analysis of manifold-valued data that are now commonly encoutered in many disciplines of Science and Engineering.
