Outreach day gives middle school girls a look into computer science

The CISE department's student-run organization WiCSE (Women in Computer Science and Engineering) led an outreach day on March 25, 2014, for middle school girls. The girls were attending a week-long spring break camp hosted by the UF WISE group, sponsored by the Florida Museum of Natural History, spending one day in each of 5 science and engineering departments around campus.

Faculty members Dr. Lisa Anthony and Dr. Meera Sitharam facilitated and managed logistics for the CISE day. The campers learned about computer science, saw exciting lab demos around the department, tried out "thinking like a computer" in some outdoor CS Unplugged activities, and had fun with hands-on coding with CodingBat and Scratch. Thank you to faculty members Dr. Ben Lok, Dr. Tamer Kahveci, and Dr. Jorg Peters, and their students, for showing lab demos. Extra thanks to the systems staff for helping the campers' computer activities go smoothly. Comments from the campers were positive, and we heard later that the CISE day was the favorite day of many of the campers! The WiCSE student group is advised by Dr. Daisy Wang."
