Goals:

This course will rovide a conceptual understanding of database management systems. We will focus on how data is stored and indexed and how queries are processed.

Database Systems: The Complete Book, ISBN: 0-13-031995-3 by Hector Garcia-Molina, Jeffrey D. Ullman, Jennifer Widom

There are also a number of other excellent text books on database systems. I would recommend the following book to interested students for additional reading:

Database Management Systems, by Raghu Ramakrishnan and Johannes Gehrke, McGraw-Hill.

Note that this book is only a recommendation for interested students. I will NOT use it in this class.

Cheating, plagiarism, and other types of academic dishonesty will be subject to punishment.
I strongly encourage class attendence. I will give 5% bonus for class attendance and participation in discussions in the class.
Please return your homeworks and project in time. Late returns will cause 20% deduction (per day) in your grade.
I strongly discourage make up exams. Makeups will only be given in extreme conditions.
Please visit only during office hours. If you really need to meet me out of the office hours email me to make an appointment. If I postpone or cancel the office hour, I will post it in the announcements section and (try to) put a note on my office door.
