Back to Spicmacay-UF home

The Sep 29, 07 spicmacay/ ggs   jam(s) (What are these?) was held at ICEC the usual place, in the upstairs, meditation room, 3-6 pm.

Although the time/date clashed with peoples schedules, they managed to drift in and out at various times, so it turned out okay, albeit somewhat longer than usual. 13 adults and 2 children participated (3 other very small children ran around and soaked it in peripherally, at least we hope). 6 new people showed up who weren't there last time, and 5 who were there last time did not show up this time. Jam coordinator Samta Kain had sent a reminder to both spicmacay and ggs groups the day before. Jam Moderator was Meera Sitharam.

Sep 29th Jam Agenda :

We followed the Jam format.

***Session 1 (for children, adults participated only a little):
Varaveena Geetham + Swara recognition exercise (didn't do very much of this); Simple improv on Ragam Shankarabharanam and 4-beat Talam (people weren't as much into this as last time).

***Session 2 (set pieces+ lecdems):
(1) Sangeeta Gnanamu, Ragam Dhanyasi, Adi (8beat) Talam, --led by Krithika, some kalpanaiswaram (by Meera)
(2) Varnam in Mohanam -- led on Flute by (??)
(3) Kadambari Priyaye --Ragam Mohanam, Tisra Triputa (7beat) led by Vinata

***interleaved Session 3 (surprise improv) since we were waiting for Ranga to lead the next piece ****
Alapanai Thanam in Mohanam (by Meera)

**********Back to Session 2********************
(5) Deva Deva Kalayami, Ragam Mayamalavagowla, Rupaka (6 beat) Talam --led by Ranga
(6) Listened to Semmangudi's rendition of above. Ranga brought CD and CD player. and Ganga very usefully brought print outs of the kriti with sahityam and swara notation. Ranga gave a very short speech on Semmangudi's long life and work. Specifically, he said the above kriti by Swadi thirunal used to be in Nadanamakriya and was transcribed into Mayamalava gowlam under request from the Travancore court.

Other Topics discussed:
--Spicmacay will have a table and announcement at the Sept 30 (5-7pm, ICEC) Gandhi Jayanthi Sitar concert by Ustad Shahid Pervez, organized by ICEC, and will help with the dismantling after the concert (spicmacay also helped with posting flyers and selling tickets for this concert).
-- Getting some tea and light snacks to these jams.
-- Contacting the "Hindustani" enthusiasts who apparently meet once every 2 wks and perhaps encouraging them to come to the spicmacay/ggs meeting once.
