The first one of the semester,
the Jan 12 spicmacay/ ggs
jam(s) (What are these?)
took place at
ICEC
upstairs, meditation room:
4 adults and 2 children participated
Two hindustani aficionados showed up!
We had a very good time, discussing differences between
Carnatic and Hindustani.
Jam Moderator was Meera Sitharam
We followed
the Jam format.
**Session 1 (children)
1 Geetham was sung in 4 different speeds by Anousha (1, 2, 3, 4).
***Session 2 (set pieces+ lecdems):
Please go to karnATik website
to get any of the below lyrics (nearly 2500 lyrics)
and also go to
really good audio archive
by
Shivkumar Kalyanaraman which include his and others'
renditions of many pieces
---Varnam in Begada -- led by Meera (veena)
--Najrul Giti: Pardoshi Megh, in Rag Simhendramadhyam
--led by Subhajit (vocal)
The rag is TOTALLY unlike the Carnatic Simhendramadhyamam
which is the 57th mela sr2g2m2pd1n2s
--Ham ko man ki (Ragam Hamir kalyani?) --led by Ajit (vocal)
--Hamsadhwani Ragam pallavi and kalpanaswaram -- led by Meera
--Ghazal: Aisa koi zindegi (Carnatic equivalent Rag: panthuvarali or
kamavardhani 51st melakarta sr1g2m2pd1n3s) --led by Subhajit
This led to Ananda natamaduvaar thillai in Poorvikalyani
janya of Ramapriya 52nd mela same as kamavardhani but with d2)
to be mentioned.
This in turn led to the dance padam
Natanam adinar vegu nagarigamagave in Vasanta to be sketched
--Rabindra sangeet: Eki Labonnye purno Pran --led by Subhajit
--Kaapi ragam, thanam, pallavi --led by Meera
--Rabindra sangeet: Aj Jyostna raat ee sobai gyechhe bon ee --led by Subhajit
Other Topics discussed :
--The emphasis on "briga" and "meend" in hindustani, that
are more like "slides" versus "gamakas" in Carnatic,
which are more like "waves"
--Shahid Parvez's Sitar concert intricacies(the Rag Bhageshri piece started
with a 11 beat talam, split into 8 and 3 (2 X 1.5)!)
--Concrete ideas on how to convert some of these jams to
hindustani or jugalbandhi jam sessions
--Spicmacay budget and this semester's plans.
