CISE Senior Project - Registration Procedure
In the past, there has been some confusion about how to get ready for Senior Project, and how to properly apply for and register for the course. The following procedure has been added, at students' request, to make this easier for you and better defined.
Please note that you must register for CIS/CEN4914 for Fall 2009 by the beginning of the Fall Semester, and have a project selected, so you can be ready when the Fall Semester drop-add week is over. However, it is best to register for CIS/CEN4914 for Fall Semester, before classes end in the Spring Semester, to avoid having to search for a Project or Advisor.
Also, note that Senior Project will be taught by Dr. Tuba Yavuz in the Fall Semester 2009.
Please perform the following steps:
Step 1. (a) Read the class web page thoroughly. (b) Consult the Project Ideas Database to find a project and an advisor, if you do not already have a project. If you have your own project in mind, then you must locate an advisor. The project database lists selected CISE advisors and their areas of interest. (c) Meet with the advisor and define your project, to include scope, goals, tasks, and deliverables.
Deadline: Fri 24 Apr 2009 This should be completed before the end of Spring reading days, if you have not done so as requested in the registration procedure for CIS/CEN 4914 for Spring Semester. If you try to register after the first week of the Fall semester, you will be too late to start your project. Starting late usually bodes ill for successful completion. Thus, we ask students to register well in advance in the Spring Semester.
Step 2. Obtain the Senior Project application form from this link or from Room E405, CSE Building, and fill it out, according to the information you obtained from meeting with your advisor in Step 1.
We are developing an electronic sign-up system. Please also try to register on this system at This Link, to help us Beta-test our registration software. Please be patient with the paper-and-pencil process, until we have the e-version fully validated. Thank you.
Put the completed paper form under Dr. Yavuz' door (CSE/E442), so she can (a) review and sign it, then (b) return it to the CISE Advisors.
Deadline: Monday 27 APRIL 2009 Again, this should be completed before the end of Spring Semester, so you can avoid Fall Semester rush. Comments about lateness from Step 1, above, apply here.
Step 3. Allow few days for the forms to be processed, check with your CISE Advisor to be sure that you are registered for the Senior Project course. This is a Department-controlled course, so you cannot register with Dr. Yavuz, and cannot register by Telegator.
Deadline: Fri 01 May 2009 This step must be completed by the end of the first week, for timely processing.
Step 4. Go to the Web page section on The Project Planning Document and complete the document in ASCII text only, not MS-Word. E-mail a text-only copy of the document to Dr. Yavuz at (
tyavuz@cise.ufl.edu). You can give a hardcopy to the CISE receptionist to be placed in Dr. Yavuz' mailbox. Ask him or her to date this copy. Or, you can slide the hardcopy under Dr. Yavuz' door (CSE/E442).Deadline: Fri 28 Aug 2009: 5pm This step must be completed prior to the initial meeting. Dr. Yavuz must have these planning documents so he can record in the course database that you have completed this important step. The earlier you complete this step after your registration form is turned in, the better situated you will be to begin your project.
Step 5. Attend the First Meeting of Senior Project (mandatory attendance) on TBD
You must read your e-mail frequently to stay in touch with your advisor and supervisor when appropriate. The supervisor will periodically send out messages to all seniors taking CIS/CEN 4914, concerning meeting announcements, presentation dates, etc.
You are completely responsible for knowing these dates, and appearing at meetings and presentations on time, fully prepared, and with the appropriate materials and attire.
