---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CIS4914 - Spring 2006 - Email Archive ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----| Message #14 |---- Date: Tue Apr 18 22:37:13 EDT 2006 Subject: CIS4914 Comments - Final Presentation Class: Tonite was the first evening of final presentations for CIS4914. Thus far, the quality of presentations has been good to excellent. However, some students do not have their advisor-graded final report or any copy of their Final Report. Some do not have their questionnaire completed. You *MUST* give these items to me when you present. With over 50 students in the class, it is a logistical nightmare to track missing documents, so please help by bringing the requested materials to your presentation. I want to thank you for your excellent input to the Midterm Evaluation process, and I have posted a response at: www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz/SeniorProject/CIS4914-Spring2006-MidtermEvalResponse.doc Please read through the response, and feel free to share your thoughts with me via email, or after presentations tomorrow night or Thursday. Best wishes for success in your presentations!! Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #13 |---- Date: Fri Apr 14 17:47:31 EDT 2006 Subject: CIS4914: Signup reminder, Be sure to have your reports with you Class: This is a short reminder to sign up for the CIS4914 Final Presentation if you have not already done so. There are still a few slots left on Tuesday evening. Also, another reminder that you MUST have your ADVISOR-GRADED Final Report with you, ready to give to me, before your present. Some students have asked for a "way out" of this requirement, and I had to tell them that there is really no alternative, because of the logistics of presenting, grading reports, and getting the grades in on time - particularly with a class of more than 50 students. My apologies for the inconvenience that the report requirement might cause for you. Unfortunately, with our large class sizes, this has been the mode in which we have had to operate over the past 4-5 years. Some reminders re: your Final Presentation: - You must use the format specified on the Web page for the Final Presentation. Be sure your references are in correct format, as this is an important issue re: professionalism. Also, you must have screen grabs, flowcharts, or circuit diagrams, E/R diagrams, etc., as appropriate to your project. - You MUST bring the following with you: 1) Advisor-Graded Final Report (unless your Advisor has already given me your grade by fax or under separate cover). In the latter case, you must still provide me with a copy of your Final Report. 2) The ABET scoring sheet filled out by your advisor (this is part of the advisor's grade sheet). 3) Your questionnaire, filled out in MS-Word, then PRINTED OUT ON A LASER PRINTER. No e-copies, no handwriting, please. The link is at: www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz//SeniorProject/ABET2006-CIS4914-FinalPres-StudentQuestions-S06.doc^[ 4) A HARDCOPY (printed on a laser printer or high-quality ink- jet printer) of your PowerPoint slides. - DO NOT WEAR ANY COLOGNE OR PERFUME!!! Alllergy season is still in progress, and the room we are presenting in (E305) is small and not necessarily well ventilated. - Prepare your schedule so you can stay at least two hours to hear other presentations, and participate as a member of the audience. If you have a presentation at the end of the day, then please be there approx. two hours early, so you can listen to other student presentations. The room (E305) is accessed through the Main Office on the third floor. Go thru the main office door, all the way to the back, then turn left. The conference room E305 is the first door on the left. Thank you for your patience with this long email. Best wishes for a successful presentation and conclusion to your project!! Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu PS. If you are doing a group project, you must do individual reports and individual presentations. I note this because it has been the subject of several email inquiries. ----| Message #12 |---- Date: Mon Apr 10 18:07:46 EDT 2006 Subject: CIS4914 Final Presentation Dates/Times, Signups, Requirements Class: This is a rather lengthy email, which details the Final Presentation and its dates/time, and requirements. Firstly, the Final Presentation dates and times (in CSE/E305) are: Tuesday 18 Apr 06 - 06.15pm to 10.15pm CSE/E305 Wednesday 19 Apr 06 - 02.00pm to 10.00pm CSE/E305 Thursday 20 Apr 06 - 07.00pm to 10.30pm CSE/E305 These are the times we could get for the rooms, which did not conflict with my schedule. My apologies for any inconvenience the late hour might cause. The relocation to E305 is due to the projector in E404 not functioning at this time. Note also that I have offered earlier hours on Wednesday, as you indicated in midterm evaluation responses. Secondly, the requirements for the Final Presentation are different from previous years, due to the ABET accreditation process. HOWEVER, THIS WILL NOT CHANGE THE WAY YOUR GRADE IS COMPUTED. In particular, - When you give your report to your Advisor, please provide him/her with the following form (on paper) for that person to fill out, sign, and give to you, so you can provide it to me with your final report: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz/SeniorProject/ABET2006-CIS4914-FinalRpt-AdvsGrd-Questionnnai re-S06.pdf All parts of the form must be filled out, including the rating- scale (1-5, N) questions in Part 2 - these will not affect your grade, but are for ABET purposes. - Also, A NEW REQUIREMENT THAT WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR GRADE is that you fill out the following form (again, for ABET purposes) and print it out, giving me the hardcopy: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz/SeniorProject/ABET2006-CIS4914-FinalPres-StudentQuestions-S 06.doc Note that this is an MS-Word file...that means you are to fill out the answers in MS-Word format, then print out the document and give me the hardcopy at the time of your final presentation. Thus, you need to provide me the following at the time of your Final Presentation: 1) Your Final Report (11pp.) on paper (not e-copy) 2) Your Presentation Viewgraphs on paper (not e-copy) 3) Your Advisor Grading Form completed by your advisor 4) Your Student Questionnaire Form completed by you THESE MUST ALL BE IN PAPER FORMAT, not e-copies. Items 3) and 4) refer to the URLs cited above. Thirdly, the signup sheets for Final Presentation are on my office door. I have left four extra slots so you can have some latitude in picking your presentation time. Please DO NOT MAKE YOUR OWN TIME SLOT (sorry for the caps, but students tend to do this at the end of the semester...) Sign up only in the slots provided. I will be sending another email before the Final Presentation, with pointers to Web links for presentation organization, dress code, etc. Pls. feel free to email me if you have questions. Thank you for your patience with this long email. Best wishes for success in your projects!! Most presentations were excellent, the remainder were good or very good! The following need to make up their presentations: ALLEN CHESLOCK MULDER PERRYMAN SHOWALTER Please arrange a time to meet with me the week after next (first week of April), preferably during my office hours. I will be on travel next week, so I will not be able to meet with you. It is a great pleasure to see my students doing so well. Keep up the good work, and best wishes for success on your projects!! Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu P.S. I will try to schedule conference rooms for the Final Presentation for the week before the week with reading days. I will keep you posted re: actual dates and times, so you can plan accordingly. ----| Message #10 |---- Date: Mon Mar 20 17:16:28 EST 2006 Subject: CIS4914 - Midterm Presentation #2 - Reminder, Comments Class: Tomorrow evening, we will begin the Midterm Presentation #2 for CIS4914. Please sign up for your presentation time slot, if you have not done so already. The signup forms are posted on my office door (CSE/E446). There will be no excuses allowed if you are not signed up - approximately 10 people need to do this... Presentations will be 10 minutes each - about 8 minutes of talking + viewgraphs, and approx. 2 minutes of Q&A. All pres- entations *muts* be individual efforts - no "tag-team" group presentations, please. If you are working in a group, then please provide an overview of your project, and spend most of your time on the specific work you are doing on that project. Viewgraphs should be similar to the ones you presented at the first midterm presentation, but you can condense the project overview. Also, you need not spend much time on the schedule except to update your audience as to what you have done since the last presentation. The majority of your presentation time should be spent talking about your design and how you are implementing it. You should have at least two viewgraphs with flowcharts, database diagrams, or circuit schematics, as appropriate to your project. If you have a screenshot or two, that is always a nice way to end your presentation. Your literature sources *must* be in one of the formats cited on the class webpage link: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz/SeniorProject/senior-citation-format.html Dress code is business casual. PLEASE DO NOT WEAR PERFUME OR COLOGNE AS THIS IS PEAK ALLERGY SEASON FOR MANY OF US. I look forward to your presentations. Best wishes for success!! Class: Congratulations on your Midterm Presentation #1 !!! The quality of presentations and viewgraphs was generally good to excellent. A few comments: - Many of you need to get your literature sources in standard format (see link on class webpage) before Midterm Presentation #2 - Some of you have blobs of text that need to be broken up into bulleted form - A few of you need to make your font (type) size sufficiently large to be read at the back of the room (a good general rule for presentations) The following students did not do Midterm Presentation #2: ALLEN CHESLOCK MULDER SANCHEZ Please email me if your name is listed above, so you can make arrangements for me to see your presentation. Thank you for the good work and effort you have put into your presentations. The next presentation will be in approximately one month - I will email times, dates, and place(s) when that is finalized (I hope to have this in about one week.) Best wishes for success in your projects!! Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #6 |---- Subject: CIS4914 - Midterm Presentation #1 - Answer to a FAQ Date: Wed Feb 22 16:29:39 EST 2006 Class: Several students have asked me if there is an amount of time that you should stay after your presentation. I would suggest that you arrive about 1/2 hour before your presentation, and stay about an hour after. Of course, the people presenting at the beginning of this evening's session would arrive on time and stay for about 90 minutes after. Similarly, the people presenting near the end of this evening's session should arrive about 60-90 minutes before their talk, and stay until the end of the presentations. The purpose of this is for you to be able to see/hear others' talks, as well as to provide an audience for each talk. My apologies for this late email, but the requests have been made in the last few minutes, hence this clarification. Thank you for your understanding, and best wishes for success! Presentations will be at the following dates and times, in CSE/E404: Tuesday 21 Feb 06 6.15pm to 9.30pm Wednesday 22 Feb 06 5.00pm to 8.30pm This is allergy season, so PLEASE DO NOT WEAR ANY KIND OF COLOGNE OR PERFUME. Many of us have allergies, and we do not need to be "challenged" in that way. Suggestions for presentations can be found at: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz/SeniorProject/senior-time-presentn.html Also, your literature citations must be in one of the formats described on the following Web page: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz/SeniorProject/senior-citation-format.html Dress code is casual, but please make your viewgraphs readable (not casual). In particular, make sure that your type size is large enough to read at the back of the room, and that you do not have funky colors that are hard to read (e.g., dark blue letters against a black background, or yellow text against a white background). I look forward to seeing/hearing your presentations!
