Class: Congratulations on completion of your final presentations. The presentations and projects were the best I've seen thus far! Excellent quality!! A couple of remarks - firstly, the following students still must give me their graded final reports: BELZA K BLOOM J GOHIL J PINDAR H PINDAR R SULLIVAN M WILLIAMS S Several of you need to present your work to me - you know who you are, so pls. stop by during my office hour on Tuesday 3-5pm, CSE/E446. Best wishes for success in your academic careers, and in a much larger sense, the rest of your lives! It has been a pleasure being your instructor. Cheers :) Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #12 Date: Sat Nov 20 18:49:44 EST 2004 Subject: More Info on CIS4914 Final Presentations and Reports Class: This is a reminder to have your ADVISOR GRADED senior project reports ready to give to me AT THE TIME OF YOUR PRESENTATION. You must have your advisor use the following form: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz/SeniorProject/senior-FinalRpt-AdvsGrd.html If your advisor will not grade your report or fill out the form, pls. email me *and cc: the email to your advisor*. >> If you are having difficulty formatting your final report, or have a case of "writer's block", you may stop by my office during my office hours Tue 23 Nov 04 3-5pm, and view several examples of previous CIS4914 Final Reports that received top grade. Dress code for Final Presentation is business formal, per URL: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~mssz/SeniorProject/senior-S04.html at the bottom of the page. PLEASE DO NOT WEAR PERFUME OR COLOGNE. There are many of your fellow students (and yours truly) who have allergies that are raging miseries at this time of year (hint: pollen season). The stress of public speaking (for you, not for me) can aggravate those allergies. It is important not to cause PWA's (people with allergies) further problems, so keep the perfume and cologne at home when you give your presentation. 'Nuff said... If you have not signed up for your presentation time, please do so now. THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUPS WITHOUT DOCUMENTED EXCUSE(S). Only the Tuesday slots are left, and few of those... I look forward to seeing your presentations. Best wishes for success!! As we discussed in the Midterm Presentation #2, the Final Presentation will be at the following dates and times: Tue 30 Nov 10am - 4pm *and* 6.30pm - 9.30pm CSE/E404 Thu 02 Dec 10am - 3pm also in room CSE/E404 I would liked to have had a Tue/Wed or Wed/Thu time selection, but the schedule was already occupied for Wednesday. The signup sheets are posted on my office door (CSE/E446), so pls. start signing up now, to get the slot you want. About a week before the final presentation, I will email more directions to you. *** PLEASE BE SURE TO BRING YOUR ADVISOR-GRADED FINAL REPORT *** TO THE YOUR FINAL PRESENTATION. YOU MUST HAVE THIS RPT. Best wishes for a successful completion of your projects! Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #10 Date: Thu Nov 4 19:35:21 EST 2004 Subject: Congratulations on your Midterm Presentations #2!! Class: Your midterm presentations ranged from good to excellent! This is the best class that I have taught in CIS4914. I look forward to seeing your Final Presentations and reading your graded Final Reports. As mentioned in discussion during the presentations, the Final Presentations will be in the timeframe 30 Nov - 2 Dec. This means that you have approx. 3 weeks to complete your work, demonstrate the prototype version to your advisor, complete your final report, and give your final report to your advisor (a week before your presentation). As we discussed, you MUST have your GRADED final report with you when you present - I will be looking through the report then, and will read it in detail later. We need to have these deadlines because of the logistical problems of grading 45-50 final reports prior to the Registrar's final grade deadline. I know this is rushed for many of you, so let me say that I recommend you work intensively on your project and begin your final report now, if you have not done so already. In a week or so, I will email you detailed directions re: the form that you need to give your advisor along with your final report, also directions for the final presentation. Thank you for your excellent work - you are a great class! Have a pleasant and productive weekend - best wishes for success :) Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #09 Date: Tue Oct 19 16:54:47 EDT 2004 Subject: CIS4914 Midterm Presentation #2 Signup Sheets Posted, door of E446 Class: The CIS4914 Midterm Presentation #2 Signup Sheets are posted on my office door (CSE/E446). I would recommend that you try to sign up for a spot as early as possible - one slot per person, regardless of whether or not you are part of a group project, as we did for Midterm Presentation #1. Dates and times are: Tuesday 2 Nov 04 6pm - 10pm CSE/E404 (conf rm) Thursday 4 Nov 04 10am - 4pm CSE/E404 (conf rm) There are more than enough slots, so you have a good chance of finding an alternate time if your first-choice slot is taken. In a week or so, I will send you some details about your present- ation. This will be a design review, so you should prepare several informative slides about your design (e.g., flowchart, schematic if a hardware project, etc.) Best wishes for success in your projects! Class: I want to congratulate you on your excellent presentations given last Wednesday and Thursday! The quality of the viewgraphs and your speaking ranged from very good to outstanding. I look forward to further progress in the next set of presentations! When my schedule is clearer, probably in a few days, I will email you regarding the days and times for Presentation #2. Congratulations on work well done! Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #07 Date: Thu Oct 7 16:32:44 EDT 2004 Subject: Reminder: CIS4914 Midterm Presentation #1 tonite... Class: Just a reminder that the second session of the CIS4914 Midterm Presentations (#1, five minutes, ungraded) will be held tonite in CSE/E404 7.00pm - 10.00pm. I have three comments, based on last night's presentations: 1) Most presentations were excellent - pls. rehearse your presentation (preferably, before a video camera) prior to actually presenting. 2) Please ensure that your Literature Source viewgraph has all references (books, articles, web pages, etc.) in a standard form, as described in the Citation Format page linked to the class web page. 3) DO NOT wear cologne or perfume - this is allergy season and we do not want to aggravate any medical conditions. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to seeing (and hearing) your presentations tonite :) Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #06 Date: Thu Sep 30 23:35:03 EDT 2004 Subject: Signups for CIS4914 Midterm presentation #1 Class: The signup sheets for CIS4914 Midterm presentation #1 are filling up fast, so pls. sign up if you haven't already. Also, we will not be able to hold the first two presentations on Wednesday at that time, as we do not have the room until 5pm. This was unknown to me at the time I posted the signups. Students listed for the first two time slots are Robinson and Thomas. Would you pls. sign up for another time slot? My apologies for any inconvenience this may cause... I will email you again before the presentations. Have a pleasant and safe weekend :) Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #05 Date: Wed Sep 29 22:44:39 EDT 2004 Subject: Second Mtg rescheduled to Thurs 30 Sep 04: 7pm CSE/E119 Class: Due to circumstances byond my control, I was stranded in Vero Beach until this afternoon, when it was possible to return to Gainesville. This involved the hurricane, a family medical emergency, and cleanup after the storm. My apologies to those of you who were able to attend the scheduled meeting in CSE/E119 on Tuesday evening, and found me absent. I asked that a notice be posted on the door of E119, and do not know if this request was fulfilled. In order to stick to our schedule, I would like to hold the second meeting tomorrow night (Thu 30 Sep) at 7pm in CSE/E119. For some of you, attendance will be impossible due to child care or employment obligations, etc. Thus I would like to propose that you visit me in my office Thursday afternoon during my office hours (3-5pm) if you cannot attend the mtg. Topics to be discussed will include time management, how to prepare your first presentation, and do's/don'ts of presenting your concept. There is no special dress code. Also, if you have problems with your project or advisor, pls. bring them to the meeting so we can discuss this. My sincere apologies for the short notice, but I just arrived in Gainesville about an hour ago... I hope to see many of you tomorrow night - Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #04 Date: Thu Sep 23 21:21:02 EDT 2004 Subject: Signup sheets for Midterm Presentation #1 on door of CSE/E446 Class: I have placed the signup sheets for CIS4914 Midterm Presentation #1 on my office door (CSE/E446). Please sign up early to get the time slot you want. Also, pls. observe the following: 1) No more than one person per signup slot - if you are part of a group effort, then you can sign up in consecutive slots, if they are available (first come, first served). 2) You must do your own presentation - no multiple person efforts per time slot. Thus, if you are working in a group of three people, each of the three persons must do a separate presentation, which should emphasize your role in the project. 3) Do not create signup slots other than those on the sheets. Also, please attend the Second Meeting, this coming Tuesday (if classes are not cancelled due to Hurricane Jeanne) at 7pm in CSE/E119 (E121 if 119 is unavailable). There, we will discuss the details of successful presentations - what to do and what practices to avoid. I look forward to seeing you on Tuesday nite, and to hearing your presentations! Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #03 Date: Wed Sep 22 21:04:54 EDT 2004 Subject: Second Meeting, CIS4914 (attendance mandatory) Class: My apologies for not emailing you sooner - I was on travel (extended trip), which begun immediately after Hurr. Frances (my office computer was turned off, and I did not have the .mailrc file for the CIS4914 class). So, this is the first opportunity I have had to email you. What I would like to do is: 1) hold the Second Meeting (time management and presentation content/style) on Tue 28 Sep at 7pm in CSE/E119, or E121 if E119 is unavailable; then 2) have the First Midterm Presentation (ungraded) during the first full week of October. This would be a week later than originally planned, but would also give you more time to prepare your viewgraphs and rehearse your presentation. I will post the Second Meeting date to the class Webpage, so you can see it there, as well. Thank you for your patience, Mark. mssz@cise.ufl.edu ----| Message #02 Date: Sat Aug 28 17:42:25 EDT 2004 Subject: CISE Senior Project - CIS4914 - First Meeting Tue 7pm CSE/E119 Class: I hope you have all registered for your classes and have your schedules more or less as you want them. This is a reminder that our first meeting will be Tuesday 31 August, at 7pm in the CSE Building, Room 119 (in the basement, near the stairwell by Turlington Hall). If 119 is occupied, then we will use 121, across the hall. Please plan to attend the meeting, where we will discuss the challenges you will face in your projects, and how to address them successfully. This is the first of two organizational meetings- the next one will be held in late September (date TBD). I look forward to meeting you, and answering your questions.
