Old news, most recent first.
Most of the people who scored poorly on the last exam
specifically had trouble with the questions on proofs (and to a lesser
extent, algorithms). To give these people another chance to learn
that material and thereby improve their grade, I will be handing out
some supplementary notes on how to write good proofs and algorithms,
giving an additional lecture on the topic, and giving an optional
extra-credit homework assignment and short exam. Further details to
be announced.
My 8th period office hour on Friday (Nov. 12) is being
moved to 7th period so that I can attend the Barr
lecture. It is about an important unsolved problem in computer
science - namely whether there is an efficient (polynomial time)
algorithm for determining whether a given proposition is a
contradiction. I would like for all COT3100 students who are free
that period to please attend this talk.
Recent homework solutions, exam 2 sample problems, exam 2
sample problem solutions, and slides reviewing the course material
since exam 1 are all available in printed form at my office. (CSE
bldg, 4th floor, rm. E442). The exam 2 sample problems and solutions
are also available on the web.
Tomorrow's (11/5) office hours for myself and my TA's are
canceled for Homecoming. If you were planning to attend COT3100
office hours tomorrow, please let me know and I will try to schedule a
separate time when someone can help you.
Homework #7 (covering Combinatorics) will be handed out this
Wednesday (10/20). HW6 is due this Friday (10/22).
Quiz 4, covering sections 2.3 and 2.6 (Integers and Matrices)
will happen Friday (10/15). Quiz 3 will also be handed back Friday,
with solutions. The class average on Quiz 3 was 63.1% (D). Homework
6 (covering sections 3.1 through 3.3) will be handed out Friday, and
due the following Friday (10/22). It will contain 20 exercises.
This week only, Mike's Wednesday (10/6) 8th period office hour
will be moved to 7th period (still Wednesday). If you would like to
talk with me but cannot make that time, please as always feel free to
email me to set up an
appointment.
HW5, covering §2.3+2.6, is now
available online, and will be handed out Wednesday (10/6) and due
Monday (10/11).
HW4, which will cover book sections 2.1
and 2.2, will be handed out Friday (9/30), along with exam solutions.
HW4 will be due Wed. (10/6).
You are allowed to bring to the exam one 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of
paper with whatever notes you want. (Front and back.) However, I
strongly recommend you commit to memory what you write, so you do not
need to spend time looking it up. The sheet should only serve as a
backup in case of unexpected memory failure.
HW3 solutions will be posted tonight (Monday 9/27).
The exam review session will be Monday (9/27), 10th-11th
periods (5:10pm - 7:05pm) in CSE room E119. Please come if you can.
I will be available after the main review session, to answer
additional questions.
There are handouts of sample exam
questions and solutions
available. The real exam will contain a selection of questions
similar to these.
HW3 is now due Monday (9/27), and the exam will be next
Weds. (9/29). The review session still has not been scheduled, and it
may be Monday instead of Friday.
I am preparing some (unfinished) supplementary notes on orders of growth.
I will be holding extra office hours Wed. 9/22, 2:00pm -
5:00pm, and Thu. 9/23, 11:00am - 1:00pm, 2:00pm - 6:00pm.

Homework #2 has been graded and was handed back Wednesday
(9/22). The class average was C+.
Quiz #2 is being regraded and was returned Wednesday (9/22).
