Stochastic Context-Free Grammars  

I was investigating this formal language model in Fall of 1994 as a possible framework in which to do protein/RNA secondary structure motif recognition, which I was considering as a research area. SCFG's are a generalization of HMM's and similar learning algorithms apply.
