How to set up a weblink for your file?

This instruction is written to help you with setting up a weblink for your file with your CISE account.

Everyone who has a CISE account is allowed to have a personal web page, which allows you to set up a weblink for your files in CISE account.  The following steps will help you to set up this structure and derive the weblink for your files:

1. Set up the personal web page directory:

Everyone who has a CISE account is allocated a disk quota.  A disk quota is the amount of disk space that is allocated to each user. Please pay attention to this, because nobody is allowed to exceed their quota. You can check your quota here.

Each CISE user's disk space is mapped as (H:), which you can find in "My Computer".

2. Set up the folder structure:

Go to the root of your (H:), create a folder named "public_html" (the folder need to be named exactly as this). Under this created folder you can put your files need to be published to others. You can even simply create your personal web page with a index.html file in this folder.  This folder now can be referenced as a weblink: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~username/, where the username is replaced by your CISE account name.

Suppose you have a file named "project1.avi" in the public_html folder. Remember to change the security property of the file by right mouse button click the file and choose properties. Make sure that you've at least allow everyone to "Read & Execute" the file, so that other people can download the file from the weblink.

3. Get the weblink:

Now the "project1.avi" can be referenced with the weblink: http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~username/project1.avi.

If you want to keep a folder structure under the personal home page folder (public_html), you can simply add the structure of your folder into the URL weblink.  For example, if you put the project1.avi file in a folder named CGS3034, which is under the folder of "public_html", the weblink will be http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~username/CGS3034/project1.avi.  Also, you need to change the security property of the folder under "public_html", that is to say your CGS3034 folder, to at least allow everyone to download and execute.

Now you can go ahead create the weblink for your own file.  This allows you to submit a weblink instead of a hardcopy or CD for your files.  One last thing to remember is: every time before you hand in the weblink, MAKE SURE IT'S WORKING by just putting the weblink in you web browser and try download it once yourself.
