Tuesday, Feb 27, 6th (12:50pm), LIT 368 SPEAKER: Russell Kirk (UF) TITLE: The hyper-Wiener index of trees The Wiener Index ("W") and hyper-Wiener ("WW") index are two graph theoretical indices used in biochemistry. Both the mathematical and scientific community has analyzed the correlation between W and WW. It is well known that W is maximized by the path and minimized by the star among general trees of the same number of vertices. The problem of minimizing W for trees with a given maximum degree was previously studied and solved. We study and characterize the extremal trees of WW for general trees and trees with a given maximum degree.
