• Textbook and other resources:
  • Data Structures with Java, by Ford and Topp, Prentice-Hall, 2005. ISBN-13: 9780130477248. You must use this exact book. Note that the publisher's web page mistakenly says the book is out of print. This is false; the glitch is due to the merge of two publishers and a faulty data import. The book is in print.
  • Authors' web page. Note that the code in the ftjavads.zip archive on the authors' web page must be viewed with tabs set to 3 spaces each. I find this awkward, since the tab setting is editor dependent (the code is otherwise well-written). You must use this version instead, which has all tabs expanded to 3 spaces each:

  • Note that the EZJava Development System discussed in Appendix E of the book, and linked to from the authors' web page, is no longer available.
• Other resources:
  • You can use any IDE if you wish. My preference is no IDE at all, with the vim editor which can highlight Java syntax. See also Eclipse or NetBeans.
  • Sartaj Sahni's COP 3530 web page. I will cover most of the same topics, just with a different book and in a slightly different order (in keeping with the order in the Ford and Topp book that we will use). Prof. Sahni has lots of videos you can watch, most of which cover the same topics we will cover. These can be helpful as a review.
  • The book uses Java 5 (also called Java 1.5.0) and that's the version I will use as well. You can use Java 6 if you wish, but please do not use any new Java 6 features. You can use Java 5.0 on the Mac also; just be sure not to use any Apple-specific extensions.

• Protected course materials:
  • To appear (solutions, sample exams, etc), in a password-protected page. There is one username and password that the whole class shares, which I announced in class. Ask me in class (do not email me) if you need it.
• Course objectives:
  Computer science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes (Dijksitra). Computer science is a domain of both applied mathematics and engineering; it is both theoretical and practical. It concerns methods for computing things, and processing / transforming information. Data structures and algorithms forms a core component of all of computer science, since processing information is done with an algorithm, and that information is held in a data structure. The lecture topics below give you a more detailed look at the methods and data structures covered in this class; by the end of class, you will be proficient in these topics, both the theory and practice (code).

• Grading:
  There will be 10 projects (roughly one each week) and two exams (a 2-hour midterm, and a final exam). The projects will comprise 40% of the grade; each exam will consist of 30%. The grading will be A=90, B=80, C=70, D=60, with possible curving.
• Class pictures:
  I will take pictures of each student in the class so that I can get to know you. Do not put your UF ID on any paper or assignment - I shouldn't need it.
• Laptops in class:
  Please do not use laptops in class unless you have explicit permission from me. They are distracting. Also do not read The Alligator (etc) in class...
