My Emily

For her fourteen birthday, March 5, 2008

My Emily, my only daughter,
You fill my life with joyous laughter,
And with your smile you sure take after,
        Your silly Daddy.
You send my laugh into the rafters;
        Come laugh with me!

It isn't only legs that dance
When ballet music gives you chance,
You turn with joy, like in a trance,
        And when you twirl,
Come take my hand, postpone romance,
        You're Daddy's girl!

You've time right now to dance with me,
Before romance, from guys you're free,
To you I give my guarantee,
        To guard your heart,
And keep that sweet heart happily
        Until we part.

Today my girl is just fourteen,
Yet one day I can see a scene:
Upon your hand a diamond's sheen,
        And with sweet tears,
I give your hand to someone keen,
        in many years!
