Project 1
by Chris Mabrey (cmabrey@ufl.edu) - HCI (CIS 4930), Fall 2010

The applet below is concerned with evaluating different input devices, specifically the
mouse and the keyboard, and how a user utilizes them for interaction. It employs a
CD player and alarm clock interface.
Instructions
The study is broken up into three sets of task lists. Each task list contains ten
different tasks to perform (like playing a song or turning the alarm on). Each task
will be displayed in the upper lefthand corner of the applet along with the method
of input to use (either mouse or keyboard, but never both at the same time).
Completing a task will reveal the next task.

You will be given thirty seconds before the first set of tasks are displayed to
familiarize yourself with the interface's basic layout and function. As soon
as practice ends, the first set of tasks will begin.

For the first two task lists, the applet will tell you which input device to use (either
the mouse or the keyboard). The input for the third task list is up to you to decide:
you may use either the mouse or the keyboard, but not both.

After completing the three lists of tasks, results will be displayed in the applet.

Below the applet you will find a questionairre. Please e-mail the results from the
applet (you can copy and paste them out of the applet text pane) and the answers
to the questionairre questions to cmabrey@ufl.edu .

Interface Applet
NOTE: I've found on some Mac and Linux environments that the right most
items sometimes get partically cut off. Since some of the text may be cut off
on these items, here is their hotkey information: Alarm Tone [T],
Turn on CD [C], Set Alarm [Tab], Turn Alarm On/Off [A], and
>> (Fast-Forward) [F]. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Questionairre
1) What is your name?

2) Which form of input (mouse or keyboard) did you choose for the third set of tasks?

3) Was the interface easy or difficult to use? Please explain.

4) Were you satisfied with the interface? Please share any thoughts or comments.

5) How could this design be improved?

Please e-mail the results from the applet and the answers to the questionairre
to cmabrey@ufl.edu .

Thank you!
