A Note to Students Not Yet Admitted to CISE
If you are interested in becoming a graduate student in our department, then I encourage you to apply. However, please do not send me your resume, or any description of your abilities and test scores. Individual professors in our department have nothing to do with graduate admissions, and so sending me an email will never help you to get in. I never look at unsolicited resumes, test scores, GPAs, or email attachments from prospective students. Please realize that admissions decisions are made by a committee that I personally have nothing to do with. I do try to respond to most of the emails that I get from interested students around the world (most of the people who send me messages believe that sending me an email will help them to be admitted), but I get so many messages that sometimes I cannot respond to all of them. Sending me a resume is a pretty good way of increasing the chance that I will not respond to your message!
If you do have a real question about our department or my research, then I encourage you to send me an email, and I will try my best to respond (though sometimes it can take awhile for me to sort through all of the useless emails containing resumes and test scores in order to get to your message; sorry!). However, please realize that your email will never help to give you a better chance of being admitted.
