Welcome

Motivation for the Course: The amount of data kept in computer files and databases is growing at a phenomenal rate. At the same time, the users of these data are expecting more sophisticated information from them. The area of data mining has developed over the last decade to address this problem.

Data Mining is often defined as discovering useful ( but hidden ) patterns / information in a database. Some other terms used interchangeably are knowledge discovery in databases, knowledge extraction, information harvesting, exploratory data analysis, etc. It has not only become an active research area but also one with a lot of applications in the real world.

Data Mining combines knowledge from the fields of Algorithms, Databases, Machine Learning, Statistics and Information Retrival. This course intends to cover the basic data mining concepts like Classification, Association Analysis and Cluster Analysis.
