Professor Vemuri elected an ACM (Association of Computing Machinery) Fellow
December 3rd, 2009

Baba C. Vemuri, a professor of the CISE Department and Director of the Center for Vision, Graphics and Medical Imaging has been elected to be an ACM Fellow 2009, which is the ACM's most prestigious member grade recognizing only the top 1% of ACM members for their outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology and/or outstanding service to ACM and the computing community in general. The Fellow award was established by ACM in 1993 to recognize outstanding ACM members who have contributed significantly from a technical, professional and leadership point of view. Professor Vemuri is being recognized for his significant contributions to the fields of Computer Vision and Medical Image Analysis.
Professor Vemuri has been engaged in cutting edge research in Computer Vision and Medical Image Analysis for more than two decades. Within Medical Image Analysis, his main focus has been the mathematical modeling and analysis of diffusion MRI data sets to infer nerve fiber connectivity and quantification of the changes in the connectivity over time in neuro-degenerative disorders such as epilepsy, as well as in spinal cord injury. Another major theme has been the development of algorithms for construction of neuro-anatomical atlases from a variety of data forms e.g., diffusion MRI, landmark (point set) data, MRI data sets etc. Common technical problems amongst all these applications are image segmentation, group-wise image registration, shape registration, and shape-based automated classification. Within Computer Vision, the prominent themes of his research are: face relighting and recognition, motion tracking, image and shape retrieval, feature preserving Image denoising and segmentation.
Professor Vemuri’s research has been well funded by federal funding agencies such as the NIH and NSF. For more information on his research, please visit http://www.cise.ufl.edu/~vemuri
