CISE Help & Resources
Account Resources
With a CISE computer account, certain resources are available (though not guaranteed) to users. These include:
- Disk space. Every account has a set amount of disk space (referred to as a quota) reserved for that user. This is permanent disk space allocated for that user.
- Internet access. Access to email, web browsing, usenet, and other internet resources.
- Personal Web Pages. A personal web page may be created and stored in a user's home directory. The web page will exist for the duration of the account.
- Consultants and online help. The department hires several student consultants to help with problems associated with the use of a CISE account.
- Backups. A user's home directory is backed up on a nightly basis. Deleted files can be recovered, provided they existed the night before.
- Printing. Each account has access to several departmental printers, and is allowed to print to them. Depending on the type of account, some printing is free, some is charged for.
- Access to the Labs. The department has labs (E114, E113, E116) with both Unix workstations and PCs. All CISE users have access to the lab during normal lab hours. Note that the labs are reserved for classes periodically.
The following resources are NOT guaranteed with a CISE account:
- All resources listed above. Any or all of the above resource may be withdrawn or limited depending on availability. They may also be withdrawn from specific users in cases of abuse.
- Privacy. In cases where strong evidence exists that the CISE acceptable use policy has been violated, according to the UF acceptable use policy, we can monitor the activities of a user, up to and including email, file content, etc. We do NOT do this type of monitoring, except in cases where strong evidence exists.
- Consulting for problems not related to the CISE account. This includes help with grove or circa accounts, help setting up a home computer, help with free email accounts (yahoo, etc.), and any other non-CISE related problems.
- Long term email address or web space. Once a person is no longer associated with the department, an account is expired. No long-term email address or web space, including for alumni, is supported.
