Account Expiration
When a person leaves the department, their account will be left open pending expiration for a set period of time. Then, the account will be expired. Finally, the account will be deleted. The following describe the various stages:
- Open Pending Expiration
-
For a period after the user leaves the department, the account will remain active. The disk quota will not change, the web page and email address remains active.
During this period, the user should copy any desired files to a different account, or back them up to floppy/tape as desired. The user should set up a mail forward to a new location and then inform others to use the new email address. Pointing the personal web page to a new location is also advised.
- Expired
-
Once an account is expired, the email and web page still exist, but the user may no longer log in to, or use the account in other ways. This is primarily a transition period to allow the user to inform people of the new email address and home page.
Since the user is no longer allowed to log in, transferring files to a new location is no longer possible without intervention of the system staf. As such, all transfers should be done during the "Open Pending Expiration" period.
- Deleted
- At this point, the account is actually removed from the system. Any access to the files will require that the account first be restored from tape. In general, this will only be done in the case of an emergency.
Different types of accounts have various lengths of time in each category. By default, the following apply:
- Class Accounts
- Accounts created for use with a single class are left open for 2 weeks following the end of the semester. At that point, they are expired. At the end of the next semester, they are deleted.
- Guest Accounts
- Guest accounts are treated the same as CISE student accounts.
- CISE Student Accounts
- These include both undergrad and graduate CISE students. The account remains open for one semester following graduation/departure. It remains a second semester expired. At the end of the second semester, it is deleted.
- Faculty and Staff Accounts
- These are treated on a case-by-case basis since their association with the department often continues in one form or another beyond their departure.
