SFTP
Many FTP servers run a secure version of FTP called Secure FTP (SFTP). For these host, you can connect to them using an SFTP client instead of normal FTP.
SFTP is available for Windows as part of the PuTTY package. It is available on all Unix hosts as part of the OpenSSH package.
