FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. "Professor, I am trying to register for this course, but I failed in my 125 attempts. Can you register me, or send someone an e-mail so that he/she registers me?"
A. No. Professors and TAs are not involved in the registration process. You should talk to the departmental advisors who are involved in the registration. If you cannot register a course that usually means the class is full. All you can do is to let the advisors know about your request. Sometimes upon receiving many requests, the advisors increased the cap of a course. This semester, the capacity of COT5405 went from 75 to 100. It seems the class is currently full.

Q. "Professor, your office hours conflict with my schedule. Could you give me an appointment to meet at another time?"
A. Feel free to stop by anytime when you see my door open. Alternatively, check the TA office hours. Alternatively, let me know of your schedule so that I can give you an appointment.

Q. "In HW3, all my solutions are correct except the one evaluated in detail (randomly chosen). I lost half points on the entire HW because of this. Can you regrade my HW?"
A. No. Tough luck! If we do that for you, we have to that for everybody and that defeats the purpose of this grading policy.

Q. "Sir, I feel like I will be sick in two days, which is the midterm exam day. Can I take a make-up?"
A. No! Unless you have a medical report excusing you from taking the exam, in which case you do not need to ask (just inform me of your status as soon as possible).

Q. "Professor, my cousin is getting married on Sept 29. She is my favorite among 23 cousins I have. I have to be there in advance. Can I take a make-up exam?"
A. No. Please read the University policy on make-up exams before making such requests. I plan to keep the number of make-ups to an absolute minimum. A make-up for a missed exam will be granted only in the most dire situation such as illness with medial report and death in the family.

Q. "Professor, I just saw my score in the final exam. It seems that I will be getting a C in this course. I need an A (or a B) in order to graduate (or in order to please my parents). Can I do an extra HW or exam or project to improve my grade?"
A. No. It is too late. You should work hard in advance and do well in the exams and HWs not to put yourself in this situation.

Q. "Professor, it is that time of the year: time to decide the letter grades. Shall we get together and decide on how to assign the grades, especially mine?"
A. No! Under no circumstances, I will be discussing or negotiating letter grades with students.
