April 30: Grades for the project are up. Within any group all members have received equal credit. The project grade is based on the quality of your report, presentation and the basic substance (content) of your project. Your grand total for the course is also displayed. Formula for grand total is: [HW1 + HW2 + HW3 - min(HW1,HW2,HW3)]/20 + EXAM1/5 + EXAM2/5 + EXAM3/5 + 0.3 * PROJECT. Note that grades for all homeworks, exams and the project were given out of 100. The homeworks are worth a total of 10 percent (only best two counted), the exams are worth 20 percent each and the project is worth 30 percent.

April 15: HW3 and midterm3 grades are up. Class average on midterm3 is 74. Midterm3 solutions are here.

April 15: Here is what your report should include: introduction with problem motivation (why is the problem useful?) and brief literature review, description and/or theory of the specific problem you worked on, description of your experiments and results (along with analysis if any) and conclusions. Please write in your own words. Do not copy phrases/sentences/paragraphs from the internet or from the papers. Cite references clearly. Put a bibilography at the end in a format similar to a research paper.

April 13: The project demos will be held on 20th (Mon) and 22nd April (Wed) between 9:00 and 12:00. The timings for each group are here. Please allow for a delay of around 10-15 minutes or so, in case some groups take longer. Again remember: your project reports are due on 17th April between 3:00 and 3:30 pm in room 309.

April 8: Homework 3 solutions are up.

April 8: Also, note that while calculating the final total, for each student, we will consider the scores of only the two assignments (out of the three) for which he/she scored higher. The scores of all three exams will be considered (i.e. you do not have the two best scores policy for the exam scores).

April 8: Owing to a bunch of objections, the exam 3 will be held on April 14th [TUESDAY] in the regular class time, in class. Bring a calculator and stapler along.

April 7: Please note that your project reports are due on the 17th of April (Friday) in the TA room, from 3 to 4.

April 7: About the project: the project presentations in class are CANCELLED. The project demos will be held on Monday 20th April and Wednesday 22nd April in Dr. Ranka's office from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. (1) You should make a powerpoint presentation (5 slides: problem description, algorithm description, experimental results and conclusion). (2) Please bring your laptops along with an easy demo of your code and the presentation as well. (3) Bring along a CD with all the code + pre-processed datasets + README file + report. Also bring a print-out of your report. The time required per group will be around 15 minutes each. In a day or so, I'll put up the exact demo time for each group.

April 7: Portion for the exam3: chapter 8 and the stuff on SVMs. Chapter 9 is NOT on the test.

April 7: We got multiple requests for postponing the midterm to 16th April (Thursday) instead of 14th April (Tuesday). We have decided to accomodate this request UNLESS someone has an objection. If anyone does have an objection please email the TA and instructor WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS. If (and only if) nobody has an objection, the test will be on the 16th.

April 3: Exam 3 will be held in class on Tuesday 14th April.

April 2: Homework 3 is up and due on April 9th.

April 1: Midterm2 is now graded. Grades are available online. The solutions are here. The class average on midterm2 is 77 (it was 69 on midterm1).

March 27: In case there is overlap between the project topics of different groups, please ensure that there is absolutely no sharing of code/experiments between groups. Also, if you use any piece of code from the web or ideas from a paper, it must be cited accurately.

March 27: The TA's office hours for coming Monday (30th March) are cancelled. The TA will hold office hours from 3 to 5 pm on Wednesday (April 1st). This change is for the coming week only.

March 25: Link to a tutorial on support vector machines is here. Another link (to the same tutorial) is here.

March 22: Note that exam 2 will be focussed on chapter 6. Chapter 7 is not important, though you can surely browse it. Bring a calculator and stapler along.

March 20: Practice exam (with solutions) from a previous semester is here. The sample exam has a question on clustering, but clustering is not part of your midterm on coming Tuesday.

March 20: Hw2 solutions are up. Grades available online. A bunch students have got a zero because they haven't written their names on the answer sheets. Please come to me with a sample of your handwriting during my Monday office hours to get this issue resolved.

March 16: Two more potential class projects. Please check here. Contact Dr. Ranka for further details.

March 15: In Hw2, there is a typo in problem 17 (d), part (i) from the textbook. The correction is available here.

March 9: Your scores (for HW1 and midterm1) are accessible now on the grades page, with your 4-digit codeword. There were no conflicts, so the first word (out of the three you sent) has been used for everybody. If you have any problems with your scores or the codeword (or if you haven't sent out the codeword to the TA), please email the TA.

March 6: Exam2 will be held on March 24.

March 6: Homework 2 is posted here and is due on Wed. 18th March during the TA's office hours.
