Dr. Gourlay will give a guest talk in class Feb 02 2007. Dr Gourlay is a member of the UCF faculty, where he teaches game programming at FIEA. He was the graphics lead on Madden 06 for the 360, a visual benchmark launch title for the xbox 360. He is currently in charge of developing a central FX particle effect package at EA-Tiburon for use across games at the studio. His talk is a post-mortem of sorts on the techniques used to achieve the visual effects seen in the Madden game. He talks about particle effects used to render the rain and field, light glare and fog, the crowd rendering, post processing, depth of field, player shadows, and general optimization tricks and techniques we used to deliver the game. There is also some stuff about gotchas when working with brand new unreleased hardware directly with the card manufacturer.
